Albuquerque Journal: Opponents of marriage equality in the Legislature should “let it go”
In the wake of the New Mexico Supreme Court’s unanimous decision to extend the freedom to marry to same-sex couples, some members of the Legislature, led by Sen. Bill Scharer, have vowed to introduce legislation that would amend our state’s constitution to permanently deny marriage to loving gay and lesbian couples — and now, The Albuquerque Journal is calling on those lawmakers to stop their attempts to overturn marriage equality.
In an editorial published on Saturday, the paper’s editorial board says that the freedom to marry is now law in New Mexico, and that lawmakers “should start the new year by letting it go” and accepting marriage equality as law of the land:
“But when it comes to the Legislature, opponents who have vowed to continue the fight by seeking an amendment to the state constitution to define marriage as being between one man and one woman should start the new year by letting it go.”
We thank the Albuquerque Journal’s editorial board for standing with the majority of New Mexicans who support the Supreme Court’s decision in favor of marriage equality. And we remain committed to standing with our supporters across the state to protect marriage for all New Mexico families by defeating any and all attempts to overturn marriage equality in the Legislature.
